I’m a Finalist! Vote for Your Favorite Memoir!

I am so excited to announce that Biographile, a website dedicated to real people, real stories, and great reading, has selected my piece, “What to Expect While Grieving for Your Father,” as a finalist in their Short Memoir Contest on Overcoming Loss!

There are four other amazing stories, so please take the time to read them all and vote for your favorite (all you have to do is “like” it on Facebook . . . but choose carefully! You only get one vote!) before the May 15th deadline. I would be flattered if you particularly enjoyed reading mine!

  2. Hi Hannah. Great essay. Brought tears to my eyes. My dad died somewhat suddenly four years ago and it’s still very hard sometimes. I think I’m luckier than you, though — it sounds like you were younger. I voted. Good luck. And thanks for stopping by my blog today. 🙂

    1. Hi Jeannette, thanks for sharing. I’m glad the essay touched you and I’m so sorry to hear about dad. It hits hard at any age, I think; especially if it’s your first significant loss. My dad died a week before finals my freshman year of college and I was devastated. My brother, who was forty-five at the time, was hit even harder, I think, because he had lived so long without ever losing someone before.

  6. I read through all of them, and each was equally as touching. Yet there was a warmth, a transparency that came through the page with your piece. I felt as if I was the most connected to your story when compared to the others. Not to mention, your writing outlasted everyone else’s.

    1. Isn’t it fascinating how diverse the responses are to such a universal theme? I particularly loved the one about losing the farm; thereby losing a way of life, in general, a piece of your heritage, and a secret pipe dream. All such interesting takes on loss.

      I’m so happy to hear my story impacted you and that you liked it. It was one of those very rare “ready-made” stories, that just came out on the page in the first draft completely finished. I knew everything I wanted to say and the exact order of the sentences. I wish writing were always that easy!

    I read all of the stories. Quite moving and very interesting how each person approached the issue of loss. Reading these stories actually inspired me to write one of my own. 🙂

    1. Thanks Kat! Isn’t it interesting how diverse the responses to a single-word prompt is? I can only imagine all the different essays the judges read through. Good luck with your story! I’ll be interested to hear how you interpret it!
